Project Description: Renovations in Bureau of Economic Geology Building 1 (BEG1) included new lighting and more spacious, functional, and safe laboratories that can host innovative research. An inviting lobby was added as well. Building 3 (BEG3) added a spacious core-viewing room, a cutting-edge Scanning Electron Microscope lab in addition to other labs, and a rooftop terrace. A rock garden was added to the new Building 2 (BEG2). The design and layout of the Stone-burner Family Rock Garden—a diverse collection of rocks from across Texas—are based on the geologic map of the state. Boulders in the garden are geographically placed where they are found in the state, and all rocks in the garden, including landscaping, are sourced from Texas mines or quarries. Rivers are illustrated with glass tiles in the poured patio.
